If you are reading this, chances are you know a bit about our history with South Bronx United (SBU). We founded the nonprofit organization in 2009, while Andrew was a middle school teacher. The mission was to use soccer as a tool to uplift youth and families in the South Bronx. It has become much more.
In the past 16 years, South Bronx United programs have reached many thousands of youth through programs in the classroom, on the soccer field, and in the community combining academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, workforce development, immigration legal services, social work services, and much more. Last year, we reached more than 1,800 children and young adults--beginning at age two and all the way through young adults navigating college and careers. The organization's core program, the SBU Academy, continues to maintain a 100% high school graduation rate and 94% college matriculation rate. College-readiness rates of graduates are three-times the rate of their peers.
Along with many communities and organizations throughout the country, we especially need your help this year. At SBU, we've had a full-time Americorps staff role ended prematurely and cut from next year due to federal government cuts, we've been addressing increasing immigration concerns, higher education concerns, and needs for other areas of community support.
So I hope you'll consider making yourself heard during these tumultuous times by supporting South Bronx United and sharing with others to support or even volunteer!
