South Bronx United uses soccer as a vehicle for social change, combining athletics with academic support, college access, mentoring, immigration legal services, and more! Since its founding in 2009, South Bronx United (SBU) has consistently grown to serve the needs of more young people and their families in the South Bronx in new ways. Just two years since from the start of the pandemic, SBU has reached more young people than ever before. In the 2024-2025 year, more than 1,800 young people between the ages of 4 and 24 have participated in the organization's programs or services, including recreational, competitive, and after-school soccer programming, academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, college and career success supports, immigration legal services, and individual and family services.
In September 2022, South Bronx United opened the new SBU Clubhouse, a 3,000 square foot space in our new offices just one block from Yankee Stadium. The space includes a mini indoor soccer play area and a classroom to give youth a safe space to hang out, complete homework, and attend college prep workshops while expanding weekly soccer classes to more young children and families. In January 2024, SBU opened the Clubhouse Café, which employs young community members as baristas and functions as the only sit-down coffee shop in the Yankee Stadium, Concourse, and Concourse Village neighborhood. This initiative is part of SBU's Workforce Development Program, and the baristas are provided with training, certification, and career prep.
Within the organization's core program, the SBU Academy, 100% of high school seniors have graduated high school and 94% enrolled in college. They are attending a range of colleges, including Columbia University, Brown University, New York University, Fordham University, State Universities, City Universities, and many more.
In 2025, SBU needs your support as it enters a new stage as organization. Funds are needed to sustain its existing programs and critical expanded infrastructure, like the SBU Clubhouse and Café. SBU needs public support to push ahead in expanding recreational opportunities, narrowing the growing academic achievement gap, and providing a comprehensive support network for at-risk, immigrant, and first-generation youth. To continue growing our impact, SBU needs more champions who can make a difference by spreading our mission and vision and by investing time or resources in South Bronx United.
