South Bronx United (SBU) is a nonprofit youth development organization with a mission of using soccer as a tool to uplift youth and families in the South Bronx. More than 1,900 young people--beginning at age two and all the way through young adults navigating college and careers--will have participated in programs this year in the classroom, on the soccer field, and in the community.
Since our founding in 2009, Macombs Dam Park is where we've called home. It is the primary site for our SBU Academy soccer practices, recreational soccer program, and community events. It's a very special place in the community as one of the few accessible locations to play soccer in the South Bronx.
Unfortunately, on April 15th, there was a fire at the park that destroyed almost all of our soccer equipment, including goals, flags, cones, pinnies, and more (youtube.com/watch?v=wURJTDgKLXg). Until the equipment is replaced, it will be a challenge to hold practices as usual.
SBU, like the community we serve, is resilient, and we will be able to bounce back from this setback. In the short term though, we are faced with several challenges, including purchasing new soccer equipment, finding a new place near the park to store it, and reallocating staff from their normal responsibilities.
By donating to SBU through this page, you will provide us with funds we can use to make up for the additional costs we will incur due to the fire. Every dollar counts!
