In my first year as Vice Chair of the Board of South Bronx United (SBU), it is with tremendous excitement that I report that by all measures, SBU achieved numerous successes this year. After completing the 10th year of programming, graduating the most seniors ever, and providing all college-bound students a scholarship, SBU went on to host its most successful annual benefit ever, and was awarded the prestigious Laureus Sport for Good award in Berlin, one of only 20 winners in history.
In the midst of a global pandemic, working in the Borough hardest hit by Covid-19, SBU continues to provide college access, online tutoring, academic advocacy, counseling, health and fitness resources, immigration assistance, soccer training videos, critical information on government programs, and material needs (e.g. laptops, food delivery credit, emergency college scholarships) to the youth and families in our community. At the same time, staff, leadership and volunteers are preparing for a return to programming that will bring back some normalcy to young people’s lives and combat a widening educational, socioeconomic, and health gap.
All told, more than 1,300 young people, from pre-K through college, will have participated in SBU programs this year on the soccer field, in the classroom, and in the community. Even with the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic, the SBU Academy maintained its 100% high school graduation rate and 94% college matriculation rate.
About
South Bronx United (SBU) is a nonprofit youth development organization with a mission of using soccer as a tool for social change. More than 1,300 young people, beginning at age four and all the way through college, will have participated in programs this year on the soccer field, in the classroom, and in the community.
Founded in 2009 to address a lack in youth athletic programs in the South Bronx, the organization's programs have grown to combine soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness programs, immigration legal services, and other family and youth supports. The SBU Academy has a 100% high school graduation rate and 94% college matriculation rate. College-readiness rates of graduates are three-times the rate of their peers. In 2020, SBU faces new challenges but remains steadfast in its mission to provide opportunity and support for its young people.
This cause is quite literally my third child, and I appreciate support in all amounts! Together we can make a difference!
