Hi everyone! Thanks for visiting my page. You might be aware that I've been coaching with SBU for a few years. I joke that coaching on Saturday AMs keeps me from going out on Friday PMs, but there's of course a lot more to it. Watching the players transform throughout the season has been incredible. So many kids start the season nervous/timid and end the season laughing/yelling with excitement for the team. I coached a u13 girls team a few years ago and it was the first time I met a little girl who said she wanted to be President when she grows up - it was awesome.
But more importantly, given the societal/economic/educational/health inequalities in this community, supporting SBU means a lot more than just being a coach or just giving a donation. This program isn't about cultivating the next Mia Hamm (although that might happen! especially under my coaching (just kidding)), it's about cultivating an environment where under privileged kids can feel supported and safe, learn to work as a team, and dream big.
South Bronx United is a 501c3 nonprofit, youth development organization that uses soccer to engage immigrant and first-generation youth and support the broader South Bronx community. SBU serves more than 1,000 boys and girls aged 4-19, combining recreational and competitive youth soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, health and wellness promotion, leadership development, immigration legal services, and other individual and family supports. South Bronx United aims to make a difference in this community by engaging at-risk, immigrant, and first-generation youth through their passion for soccer.
Founded in 2009 to address a lack in youth athletic programs in the South Bronx, the organization's programs have grown to combine soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness programs, immigration legal services, and other family and youth supports. The SBU Academy has a 100% high school graduation rate and 94% college matriculation rate. College-readiness rates of graduates are three-times the rate of their peers. In 2020, SBU faces new challenges but remains steadfast in its mission to provide opportunity and support for its young people.
Together we can make a difference. LET'S DO ITTTTTTTTTT!!!!
