This November I am running the NYC marathon! After running three half marathons over the last five years, I am honored to be representing South Bronx United as I run 26.2 miles through the five boroughs. I couldn’t think of a better inspiration to run — supporting a mission and a neighborhood that I am so passionate about.
South Bronx United (SBU) is a nonprofit youth development organization with a mission of using soccer as a tool for social change. Founded in 2009 to address a lack in youth athletic programs in the South Bronx, the organization's programs have grown to combine soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness programs, immigration legal services, and other family and youth supports. The SBU Academy has a 100% high school graduation rate and 94% college matriculation rate. College-readiness rates of graduates are three-times the rate of their peers.
As a teacher in the South Bronx, I saw the power of athletics. From going to my students’ games after school to competing with my students during their gym classes or lunch periods, I saw how important it was for kids to engage with each other through physical activity and to challenge each other outside the confines of the classroom.
Many of my students had responsibilities after school, whether it be caring for siblings or working, so they did not always have the opportunity to participate in school sports. South Bronx United not only provides an opportunity for students to explore sports on the weekend, but it also provides support in other crucial areas of their development from academics and college preparation to things that may arise in their family lives like immigration legal services.
I am so thankful to have such an amazing support system cheering me on along the way. Every donation towards this goal will make a difference in the lives of students across the South Bronx. Thank you for all your support!
