South Bronx United + New York City Marathon

Dear friends and family,

Since November I have been volunteering at a terrific organization in the South Bronx that combines academic enrichment and sports. South Bronx United offers tutoring, teaching, and soccer coaching for kids of all ages, culminating in college coaching and SAT preparation for high school seniors. The kids really benefit from the support, and many go on to college on full scholarships. This year all 23 seniors received scholarships and are attending college in the fall! To support SBU, and by running in the New York City marathon for the SBU team, I am hoping to raise at least $2,500 for the organization.

SBU has been around for ten years. It is a nonprofit youth development organization with a mission of using soccer as a tool for social change. SBU serves more than 1,100 boys and girls annually through programs. In addition to academic support, the programs also include leadership development, health and wellness programs, immigration legal services, and other family and youth supports with recreational and competitive soccer programs. SBU participants range from ages 4 to 19 years old. The majority come from low-income, immigrant families and reside in the South Bronx, the nation's poorest congressional district.

The picture above shows the sophomore girls I worked with this year. I also work with sophomore boys, and teach English grammar and writing, and help with all kinds of homework, application essays, and resume writing. The kids are awesome. Ike also volunteered at SBU this spring teaching and helping middle school kids.

I started training for the marathon a few months ago. I am excited for the race (well, more like a long excursion on my part) and appreciate all the support we can get!

Thank you for your help.

All best,

Sarah
