Growing up in Kansas City, I was lucky to have leadership figures - especially my high school soccer and lacrosse coaches - who taught me the value of athletic endeavors, academic discipline, and teamwork. Children all around the country should have those same opportunities.
South Bronx United (SBU) is a nonprofit youth development organization with a mission of using soccer as a tool for social change in New York City. More than 1,400 young people, beginning at age four and all the way through college, will have participated in programs this year on the soccer field, in the classroom, and in the community. I've had the pleasure of supporting SBU over the past few years.
Founded in 2009 to address a lack in youth athletic programs in the South Bronx, the organization's programs have grown to combine soccer with academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness programs, immigration legal services, and other family and youth supports. The SBU Academy has a 100% high school graduation rate and 94% college matriculation rate. College-readiness rates of graduates are three-times the rate of their peers.
This year, I'm running the NYC Marathon in support of SBU. It is a privilege to be part of SBU's mission, and I appreciate your support in all amounts. Together we can make a difference in the lives of New York youths - and you don't have to do any of the running!
Donations of $250 or more will be entitled to receive a guided tour of The Explorers Club NYC Headquarters (beverages at the newly renovated bar included) at the time of their choosing;
Donations of $100 or more will receive SBU swag post-race and can request a song for my running playlist.
