It is hard to believe it, but it's now been 10 years (!) that I've been on the board of South Bronx United (SBU) a nonprofit youth development organization with a mission of using soccer as a tool to uplift youth and families in the South Bronx. In the time I've been on the board, the organization has expanded its reach to serve 2.5 times more kids and grown its budget by nearly 5 times.
Now, more than 1,900 young people--beginning at age two and all the way through young adults navigating college and careers--participate in programs annually in the classroom, on the soccer field, and in the community. The organization combines academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness, workforce development, immigration legal services, and other youth and family services with soccer programs. Its core program, the SBU Academy, has a 100% high school graduation rate and a 94% college matriculation rate.
On November 13th, SBU will host its 15th Annual Benefit, the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year—raising about 15% of its annual budget. As a proud Host Committee member, I’d love to invite you to join me in supporting this amazing mission.
